It is one of the best kept secrets of the province of Cadiz. They are located on Bolonia Beach, in the municipality of Tarifa, in the Campo de Gibraltar region, opposite the Moroccan city of Tangier.
Bolonia Beach is bordered to the west by Punta Camarinal and to the east by Punta Paloma. It is 3,800 metres long and 70 metres wide. It is one of the few unspoilt beaches you can find in the south of the peninsula.
In addition to the Natural Pools, on Bolonia Beach you can find the Roman city of Baelo Claudia and the famous Bolonia Dune. Although they are not the subject of this experience, we will briefly describe them below, as you can take advantage of that same day to visit them:
– Roman City of Baelo Claudia. In excellent condition. Created from a Phoenician settlement. Great importance as a seaport. Discovered in 1917 by a French archaeologist. It has a visitor centre and museum that can be visited every day for free (closed on Mondays).
– Bolonia Dune. Declared a natural monument in 2001. Of great ecological importance. Its dune system is mobile and naturally prevents the establishment of plant species, except for the marsh, which helps to maintain the dune. The innermost parts are populated by stone pine. The continuous advance of the sand causes the pines to die.
The landscape of Bolonia beach is very difficult to forget, and you will spend a wonderful day at the beach. You must be careful with the east wind, when it blows strongly, it is practically impossible to stay there, however, you will see that the place is full of lovers of water sports, mainly windsurfing and the fashionable sport of kitesurfing.
The natural pools are in the opposite direction to the Dune and you cannot miss them, you will find them, right on the eastern part of the beach. This is a group of natural pools formed by the sea water that remains on the rocks when the tide goes out. Its difficult access is an advantage for all those looking for solitary places, and fleeing from the masses of people.
In addition, in this area there are the famous natural water jets that together with the slate rock form a therapeutic mud with which people usually smear their bodies. You should only go when the tide is low, or is going out. If the tide is full, the natural pools will be completely covered and you will not be able to enjoy them.
When you arrive, after more than an hour of walking you will be able to enjoy the crystal-clear waters of the natural pools. You will not regret having gone. It is worth it.
On the way back, if you have left the car next to the La Cabaña beach bar, you can enjoy the sunset tasting its famous apple pie and a natural fruit juice, or drinking a mojito with chill out music at the Sirocco beach bar.
